History Shaped Modern Woodmen of America.

Modern Woodmen of America was founded in 1883, and yes, “modern” has always been part of the company name. The founder, Joseph Cullen Root, wanted to develop a business model that benefited people in their everyday lives, helped to build homes and provided secure futures for generations to come. He viewed the trailblazers, the “woodmen,” who worked cutting lumber for buildings and homes and creating roads and trails for settlers to follow, as the model for his visionary approach to financial stability.

Modern Woodmen of America is the third largest fraternal financial institution in the country. It is a member-owned and member-operated association. As such, Modern Woodmen provides financial services for member families in three distinctive ways:

  • Financial services (insurance options such as life, disability* or long-term care*), investment opportunities, college and retirement planning;
  • Quality family life through their fraternal benefits; and,
  • Community impact via community and volunteer endeavors supporting members where they work, live and play.
