As with most months throughout the year, May and June offer a variety of interesting, exciting and one-of-a-kind events for families to experience in and around the Triad. Here are some of the top offerings to consider:
Archives Aflame
March 23-May 5
Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art, Winston-Salem
Free
The atomic bombing of Hiroshima is explored by Kei Ito and Andrew Paul Keiper at SECCA. The installation features 108 photograms made using sunlight, light-sensitive paper and Ito’s body evoking those lost in the bombing. During a time of unprecedented nuclear proliferation, the artists want viewers to reflect on the ramifications of the current course and to learn from the past.
Man of La Mancha

Miguel de Cervantes, an aging failure as a poet and playwright, is thrown in a dungeon in Seville, Spain to await his trial. Dragged into a kangaroo court by his fellow prisoners wanting his few possessions and his incomplete novel, “Don Quixote.”To save his manuscript, Cervantes proposes to defend himself in the form of a play. The court agrees. Cervantes and his manservant create costumes and transform themselves into Don Quixote and Sancho Panza.
Third-Year Student Films

These 12-minute shorts are a collaboration between student screenwriters, producers, directors, cinematographers, production designers, editors, sound designers, composers and animators.
Fourth-Year Student Films May 3, 3-5 p.m. and 8-10 p.m. UNC School of the Arts, Winston-Salem Free
These 15-minute capstone projects feature local casts and Triad locations. The collaborations took place over a full year or more. These films represent the culmination of the students’ college work and the official start of their professional film careers.
Boyz II Men with the Piedmont Wind Symphony

The Piedmont Wind Symphony, an orchestra without a string section, will be joined by Boyz II Men, the four-time Grammy Award winners. Boyz II Men is one of the iconic R&B groups in music history. The concert will feature their best hits.
Jerry Bledsoe

Free
Jerry Bledsoe, a New York Times bestselling author and a Greensboro native, will share stories from his life from his new memoir,“Do-Good Boy: An Unlikely Writer Confronts the ‘60s and Other Indignities.” Bledsoe’s other books include “Bitter Blood,” “Blood Games,” “Before He Wakes,” “Death Sentence,” “The Angel Doll” and “A Gift of Angels.”

Sweet and processed food are the subject of works by artists for the spring show. Food ranging from designer cupcakes and culinary confections to Twinkies and Frosted Flakes are explored by the artists in “SWEET.” According to Edie Carpenter, the curator, “Sweet foods are portrayed by these artists as symbols of Pop culture, ephemeral, triumphs of the baker’s craft, and magnets for consumer taste buds, engaging visitors in a sensory exploration of food as an object of beauty and temptation.”

Wood Fire NC Weekend Pottery Tour
Free
This is an opportunity to tour 13 wood-fire pottery studios and talk to the potters about their craft. The tour on Saturday finishes at 5 p.m. with a trip to StarWorks Tap Room in Star. Food trucks and microbrews will be on site.

The successful 4 LatiDos tour concert tour continues in 2019. The electrifying show consists of three segments. First, Sin Bandera takes the stage. Then it’s Camila’s turn – and finally the four artists join their voices, musicians and songs in a powerful closing.
