Fall Parade of Homes: Home Builders Association of Winston-Salem Celebrates 60 Years!

BY ADELE CASANOVA

Fall is in the air! Finally, we can enjoy crisp cool mornings, autumn leaves, and pumpkin spice. And yes, the Fall Parade of Homes, presented by the Home Builders Association of Winston Salem (HBAWS). As always, this tour of beautifully appointed new and remodeled homes will inspire us to live in esthetically pleasing and environmentally designed homes. The two-day tour of homes is free to attend and geared toward the whole family as a fun and educational experience.

Sponsor of this year’s Fall Parade of Homes is BB&T. Branch Banking and Trust is pleased to support the work of local home builders and remodeling professionals. Dates for the Fall Parade are Saturday and Sunday, October 12th and 13th, and Saturday and Sunday, October 19th and 20th from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m.

This year’s Fall Parade Chair is Angela Kalamaras of Allen Tate Real Estate, and Co-Chair is Barry Wilson of Houck Residential Designers, a drafting and design company specializing in residential plans, including new construction, remodeling, and additions.

Angela remarks, “The Fall Parade is the best there is, since there is no charge to the consumer for visiting some of the most beautiful homes in different architectural styles and price ranges. In the early 2000s, we wanted to be certain that every master bath had a tub/shower unit. We then moved to having large showers, and now we are back to our bathtubs, but be certain that it is clawfoot. Our color of choice appears to be different hues of gray; whether it be blue-gray or greige, it is now considered the ‘off-white’ of the industry. Do yourself a favor and visit some of these sites. You will fall in love with these homes.”

Be sure to include in your tour this year’s Association House, built by Wishon & Carter Builders Inc. represented in this project by Randy Trinkle, Residential Project Manager, and Ted Baity, Residential Division Manager. Ted describes the house, “At 3,500 sf this five-bedroom, four-and-a-half bath house features a three-car garage and a generous sized screen porch, as well as eleven-foot ceilings in the master bedroom and living room. The house features many unique details, including a hidden pantry and a real mica-textured fireplace-surround.” The Association house is located in The Arbors at Meadowlark at 5811 Zinfandel Street. It is listed by Arlene Rouse of Leonard Ryden Burr. Each year, a portion of proceeds from the sale of the Association House benefits HBAWS operational expenses. It contains wonderful extras, as HBAWS members provide donations, products, and services in the building of the house.

Designer Leigh Ann Raines, President of Chic by Design, provided her design expertise for the Association House. I wanted the Association House to incorporate elements that feel current and fresh, yet honor the architecture of the home. You’ll see modern touches like the stair railing and spindles, as well as classic style with herringbone tile. I incorporated monochromatic walls and trim that are popular now, and that’s the wonderful thing about paint, it’s easy and relatively inexpensive to change. The neutral palette is the perfect backdrop for bold color in art and accessories. The use of organic and handmade materials was important, like our handmade Spanish tile and a surprising twist for fireplace stone!”

With this year’s Fall Parade of Homes, the HBAWS continues to celebrate its 60th anniversary. Started in 1959, and governed by an elected board of governors, it represents builder members in Forsyth and Stokes counties involved in residential/commercial building and remodeling. Charter sponsors of the organization are Ferguson Enterprises, Pine Hall Brick, Piedmont Natural Gas, Smith-Phillips Lumber, Amarr Co., Williams Malcom Co., and Chipman, Inc.

HBAWS Executive Vice President Darlene Saunders comments, “This year, 2019, the Home Builders Association of Winston-Salem marks six decades of successful home-building collaboration with its 57th Annual Parade of Homes. Since its first meeting in 1959, the Home Builders Association has grown substantially in membership, has achieved great success over the past 60 years, and continues to produce a free, self-guided tour of Parade homes each Spring and Fall. We look forward to seeing what our members have accomplished and invite the general public to tour the latest.”
