If you know Salem Smiles in Winston-Salem, you know Dr. David Woods is thoroughly dedicated to providing an uplifting experience for every patient!
After arriving in 2022, he began with renovations to freshen the space, evoking a vibe that’s as stress free as possible – calm, relaxing and a much livelier décor than you might find at most orthodontist offices.
As part of his goal to offer patients the most positive experience possible, Dr. Woods has once again tapped the vibrant Winston-Salem art scene, working with Carrie Leigh Dickey, owner and visionary of Artfolios.
“Our relationship with this group of local artists has offered the opportunity to add uplifting artwork throughout our practice,” shares Dr. Woods. “Working with Carrie, an art historian, her husband, Luke, and daughter, Luscinda, has been a blessing. Of course, I met them after being privileged to provide Luscinda’s orthodontic care, giving her a gorgeous smile!”
“Dr. Woods is an artist himself!” shares Carrie. “You can see this in his practice, as he transforms misshapen smiles into works of art. My daughter, Luscinda, experienced this firsthand. She calls the smile Dr. Woods helped her achieve a ‘designer smile,’ and she will tell you how he did for her what no other dentist thought possible. Dr. Woods has helped her smile the smile she felt inside, but never saw in the mirror. For that, I am truly thankful.”
When Dr. Woods moved into the community, Carrie immediately recognized that he set out to make his office space warm and comfortable.
“As part of the design makeover, he chose to support local artists by showcasing their works along his many walls. That’s how he was introduced to Artfolios – my family’s passion project which champions about 40 Winston-Salem area artists. Dr. Woods explored our website and visited collections of art in person – then I created an art plan for Salem Smiles. The artwork in the lobby is very peaceful – with long lines – selected to create a tranquil atmosphere that patients’ families can wait in during appointments. As soon as you enter the back treatment rooms, the art becomes full of energetic movement, as this is a space for action and possibility. Those pieces seem to dance – some to classical tunes, others to hard rock! What a remarkable collaboration this has been – Dr. Woods has indeed made his office welcoming with a desire to serve and embrace all.”
“I like abstract artwork that’s fun, bright, full of possibilities and interpretations, but pleasing to look at,” Dr. Woods shares. “Not your typical dental office!”
Relaxed, happy patients equal success for Dr. Woods and the Salem Smiles team, who continue to refine their level of care and dedication to patient comfort, while also keeping current with the newest techniques. Salem Smiles is also proud to share their investment in a stellar new technology for patient treatment – a CBCT or Cone-Beamed Computed Tomography. This dental imaging technique utilizes a cone-shaped X-ray beam to create detailed, three-dimensional images of the teeth, jawbone and surrounding structures.
“A CBCT scan is essential in many cases to obtain detailed, three-dimensional imaging for accurate diagnosis and treatment planning,” adds Dr. Woods. “CBCT improves diagnostic accuracy by providing high-resolution 3D images and is crucial for evaluating surgical planning (for the jaw and teeth), orthodontic assessment (including dental extractions and teeth exposures), TAD placement, orthodontic appliance placement, evaluation of teeth anatomy (including root resorption and dental pathology) and growth observation. Early and accurate diagnosis can prevent complications and reduce the need for more invasive procedures. Salem Smiles is also able to provide in-house aligners for select orthodontic cases that allow for lower cost treatment than traditional big-box suppliers like Invisalign. Another happy update from Salem Smiles – Dr. Woods was married last August to Dr. Jennifer David, who is a dermatologist in Greensboro. The two are settling into life in Winston-Salem together, looking forward to many adventures ahead!
