At the heart of the Novant Health philosophy is embracing the ever-changing healthcare landscape, while staying true to their commitment to patient safety, quality, health equity and the overall human experience.
At Novant Health Orthopedics & Sports Medicine on Robinhood Road in Winston-Salem, that experience encompasses delivering remarkable care for orthopedic conditions and sports medicine injuries exactly when you need it – immediately! With same-day scheduling available for fractures, sprains and strains for all age groups as well as walk-in hours each weekday during normal clinic hours, patients can receive care on their own schedule. Having you on the road to recovery swiftly is always goal number one!
“What truly sets our clinic apart is the welcoming, family like atmosphere we’ve worked hard to create,” says Clinic Administrator Angela Baugh. “I have the privilege of reading our patient survey comments each week, and one sentiment consistently stands out – our patients feel valued. They know they aren’t just a number to us. While we are deeply committed to ensuring the highest quality of care and safety, it’s the relationships we build with our patients that really make a difference.”
Dr. Phillip R. Mason – who is very involved in supporting the same-day clinic and is also a pediatric orthopedic surgeon – grew up in a small town where his grandfather was a pharmacist and inspired him to study medicine. He’s been with Novant Orthopedics for 10 years and enjoys getting people back to doing what they love – a favorite sport or simply playing with their grandchildren!
“It’s important to seek care as early as possible to diagnose your injury in order to prevent any potential for further damage,” shares Dr. Mason. “Our goal is to bring you back to your normal active life as soon as possible, as delayed treatment can also lead to longer recovery.”
Kevin Frisch, PA-C, works with Dr. Mason at the Robinhood Road clinic and points out the importance of our community having prompt, reliable orthopedic care.
“We’re able to provide patients with early treatments and interventions that help ensure they are set on the right track for a full and speedy recovery,” he says. “We see all ages and treat all kinds of injuries and ailments, from acute fractures and sports injuries to flare-ups of chronic conditions like osteoarthritis and overuse injuries, such as tendinitis and bursitis. Many of our patients are avid runners, golfers and tennis players with sports injuries related to those hobbies.”
Kevin knew from a very young age that he wanted to work in medicine, and while on clinical rotations in PA school, he quickly realized orthopedics was his calling.
“I have 14 years of Orthopedic PA experience, but I continue to learn new things every day. I recently moved to the Winston-Salem area from Long Island, NY with my wife and two young boys, and I feel extremely fortunate to have landed with a group filled with such talented, devoted and supportive orthopedic providers. Our clerical and clinical staff utilize a team-based approach which enables us to provide compassionate and top-notch care for our patients and streamline follow-up care with the specialty providers they may need to heal from their injuries.”
Athletic trainer Trevor Christianson also works closely with the Novant Ortho providers, assisting with patient vitals and histories, ordering X-rays and administering casting, splinting or bracing as prescribed by Dr. Mason and the PAs. He is inspired by the one-on-one interactions he has with patients.
“I typically see patients very early in the treatment/recovery timeline – often during their first visit to the clinic,” he shares. “I consistently hear testimonies from our patients about how thankful they are to have same-day orthopedic clinic availability – at the level of quality and efficiency that we provide.”
He emphasizes how crucial it is for patients to seek treatment for their injuries as soon as possible, especially in the case of potential fractures.
“The body begins to heal quickly after it has been damaged, and if the bones are in poor alignment or in the wrong position, it could lead to increased healing time and possible future issues,” he adds.
For patients who find they need orthopedic surgery, Novant Health offers both traditional and minimally invasive options, including some robotic-assisted surgeries. Since a patient’s overall health can strongly affect their recovery from injury, Novant Health providers assist with other issues such as smoking, blood sugar or mental health concerns, and continue patient interaction throughout injury recovery with access to physical therapy or other rehabilitation services.
Novant Health Orthopedics & Sports Medicine is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m. for walk-in appointments. The clinic is located at 200 Robinhood Medical Plaza in Winston-Salem, 336.718.7950. For athletic injuries, the clinic is convenient to Mount Tabor High School, Jefferson Middle School and Robinhood Road Family YMCA and also to Pfafftown, Lewisville and Bethania.
