Spring is in full swing, and it’s time to hit a destination that’s not too far from home but well worth planning a trip. In this month’s Getaway Guide, I’m sharing about a small town that embodies everything good about the ideal American small town.
Salisbury, home of Cheerwine, is packed full of history, culture, great food and outdoor adventure. It’s one of those places that you will want to visit regularly!
America’s Ideal Small Town
While the “big city” is always fun to visit, about halfway between Winston-Salem and Charlotte on 85 sits Salisbury. This small town packs a big punch when it comes to charm, things to do and family friendly vibes.
If you want to skip the drive and traffic on 85, consider taking the train. You can go out of High Point, and one of the Amtrak stops is in Salisbury. Best of all, a coach ticket between the two destinations is only about $10 per person!
Top Four Things to Do In Salisbury
If you plan to stay in Salisbury for the weekend or need things to do in conjunction with the Cheerwine Festival, here are four wonderful options of things to do. Keep in mind that many of the downtown businesses and restaurants are closed on Sundays.
- Dan Nicholas Park – This park is so much more than a park! It offers miniature golf, an aquarium, gem mining and tons of outdoor fun for families.
- N.C. Transportation Museum – Not only is this a cool spot for train lovers but really anyone looking for an interesting place. Be sure to come back in the fall for A Day Out with Thomas and during the holiday season for The Polar Express.
- Downtown Salisbury – From historic theaters to the impressive Bell Tower Green Park, you won’t want to miss strolling this area. Don’t forget to grab a nationally famous hot dog or burger at Hap’s Grill.
- New Sarum Brewing – This brewery has great beers, fun entertainment & events, and is family and dog friendly!
Why Visit in May?
As Salisbury is the birthplace of Cheerwine, it’s only fitting that they host an annual Cheerwine Festival! It’s popular not only for all the fun that it offers but there are also no entrance fees.
What does the festival entail? Food, local vendors, a beer garden, live music, kids’ activities and Cheerwine, of course. Be sure to purchase some Cheerwine merch to always remember the trip and festival.
