Getaway Guide: July’s Must-Visit Spot – Cool Off and Enjoy a “Wee Bit” of Scotland at the Grandfather Mountain Highland Games

July is one of the incredibly hot months here in the Triad, so there is no better time to escape to the mountains to cool off! That’s why this month’s Getaway Guide features a small mountain with big games and fun!

For most areas of Winston-Salem and Forsyth County, US-421 tends to be a slightly faster route. However, if you live in Clemmons or the western part of Forsyth County, it might be a better choice to take I-40. Dating back to 1956, the Grandfather Mountain Highland Games bring Scottish culture and traditions right here to the NC mountains.

Unmatched Mountain Views

Located right outside Grandfather Mountain, Linville is THE mountain community. From picture-perfect views of the surrounding mountains to a tight-knit community, it’s the perfect spot to cool down this summer.

Top 3 Things to Do in Linville

These three spots in Linville are a must visit while in town:

  1. Old Hampton Store & Barbeque – This is so much more than a store; it also has BBQ, live music and a renowned southern folk art gallery.
  2. Mile High Swinging Bridge – A visit to this area wouldn’t be complete without this popular attraction, and it provides amazing views of Grandfather Mountain.
  3. Rough Ridge Lookout – Another outdoor spot with amazing views, this one is known for its gorgeous sunrises.

Why Visit in July?

Anytime of year is, of course, gorgeous in this area, but July turns up the entertainment value in Linville. That’s all thanks to the annual Grandfather Mountain Highland Games (GMHG)! This family friendly event has everything from, yes Scottish games, to Celtic entertainment, children’s activities and even sheepdog demonstrations.

Stephen Quillin, president of the GMHG, shares a little history about the games. “The first Grandfather Mountain Highland Games were the product of a collaboration between Agnes MacRae Morton and Donald F. MacDonald. They were held on August 19, 1956 to coincide with the August 19, 1745 Raising of his Standard by Bonnie Prince Charlie at Glenfinnan, Scotland. The Games were a one-day affair in 1956 and 1957, and moved to a two-day festival held the second full weekend in July in 1958 before shifting to the current four-day format. The Grandfather Mountain Highland Games has steadily increased in size and stature from its humble beginning. It is now the largest gathering of Scottish families in the world.”
