July in North Carolina feels like the heat is at full blast, so there is no better day trip than the mountains! If you are looking for a place to take the family this summer, I highly recommend Tweetsie Railroad. It combines fun, nostalgia and mountain views for all ages.
Located in Blowing Rock, this drive is literally a straight shot down US-421 North. Outside of the interchange with I-77, it’s a mostly smooth and easy route to travel.
Why Visit Tweetsie Railroad?
Tweetsie Railroad opened on July 4, 1957 and was North Carolina’s first theme park. Next year, it will celebrate 70 years, and there is a reason it’s lasted this long. It is a true, family friendly destination for fun. There is something very special about riding on Locomotive No. 12 which happens to be the last surviving train from the historic East Tennessee and Western North Carolina Railroad. It honestly feels like you are transported back in time.
Top 5 Things To Do at Tweetsie Railroad
From rides to animals and, of course, trains, there is ultimate fun to be had at this North Carolina destination. Even if you are there for a full day, it’s hard to fit everything in. Here are a few can’t-miss attractions:
- Historic Train Ride – The park operates two steam locomotives, No. 12 “Tweetsie” and No. 190 “Yukon Queen” and offers continuous rides around the park throughout the day. You might even see a cowboy or two on the Wild West Train Adventure ride!
- Deer Park Zoo – You might come for the train and rides, but seeing, petting and feeding the animals is a must. It’s home to goats, emus, llamas, donkeys and more. It’s a great, laid back option for little ones to pet and feed animals at their own pace.
- Amusement Park Rides – There are two major areas of the park that offer amusement rides. First is the Country Fair area which has classics like a carousel and Ferris Wheel among more exciting rides. Bonus – the arcade here has all the fun and nostalgia you need. Next is Miners Mountain which has rides for the younger kids, including mini swings and a smaller train.
- Live Shows – From Can Can dancers to magicians, there are tons of entertainment options each day. On July 4th, the park has special evening hours that include nighttime shows and a fireworks display at the end of the night.
- Playground – Up on Miners Mountain is a playground that is perfect for kids of all ages. It’s a great spot to let your kids burn off some energy before riding on the train or catching a show! Plus, it’s near the ice cream shop, Mountain Ice Cream.
What to Know Before You Go
You are allowed to bring outside food and non-alcoholic beverages in small coolers, lunch bags and book bags. Please note: Cans, glass bottles and alcoholic beverages are prohibited inside the park. They also have several food options available for purchase, including classic fair food like funnel cakes, fudge and popcorn.
The park is stroller friendly and handicap accessible, but bear in mind, it’s on a mountain side, so it’s all uphill in one direction. We used separate smaller umbrella strollers for our two preschoolers, and it worked out well. You can also take the bus up to Miners Mountain, and they are great about putting the strollers on the front.
During the month of July, Tweetsie Railroad is open from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Thursdays through Mondays. Except on Saturday, July 4th when they stay open until 9:00 p.m. and shoot off fireworks at 9:30 p.m.
