April is the perfect month for taking the family to a location that is the embodiment of outdoor adventure. In this month’s Getaway Guide, I’m sharing about a small town that is a true mix of southern charm and intriguing history.

Wilkesboro is small in size but mighty in things to do for the entire family. April brings the town to life even more with the sounds of music from MerleFest filling the streets. This celebration spans a long weekend and is the perfect excuse to get away to the gateway of the North Carolina mountains.

Why Visit in April?

History comes to life through music every April in Wilkesboro through the magic that is MerleFest. Founded in 1988, it is named after world-renowned flatpicker Doc Watson’s late son, Eddy Merle Watson. It showcases and celebrates music of the Appalachian region. You’ll hear a mix of music including old-time, classic country, bluegrass, folk, gospel, blues, Americana, classic rock and many others.

Unlike many music festivals in NC, MerleFest is an alcohol-free festival. This makes it perfect for families, especially those with young kids. Furthermore, there are numerous activities for children of all ages.

One popular area for families and kids is the Little Pickers tent. There are crafts, an art wall and the opportunity for visitors to play the different instruments they see and hear at MerleFest.

A major highlight of the festival is the Doc and Merle Watson garden of the senses. It is home to many amazing gardens and even a children’s playground.

MerleFest Director Wes Whitson shares that the 2025 lineup will not disappoint. It includes

Bonnie Raitt, The Avett Brothers and the return of their Late Night Jam, hosted by Sam Bush, which will include several legendary performers.

Whitson’s tip to MerleFest visitors is to, “Be prepared for all seasons. Spring in Wilkes County can present any situation and, most of the time, we get a little rain before it’s all said and done. Our fans don’t seem to mind a little rain.”
