Enjoy an Outdoorsy Summer in the Piedmont

From watching your favorite sports team outside, to listening to wonderful live music, this summer is the perfect chance for the entire family to head outdoors. Lucky for all, Winston-Salem and the surrounding area have plenty of different outdoor events sure to delight everyone. June is the perfect month to plan out which events you would like to attend. While the weather is still elevated, we are not in the thick of July/August heat, so it is ideal for an evening or day outside. Curious about where to start? Read on for five local outdoor events to put on your own summer bucket list.

Enjoy watching your favorite flick outdoors! One of my fondest summer memories was heading outdoors to watch a drive-in movie with my friends. Lucky for all of us, this tradition can still happen at the Eden Drive-In. Located at 106 Fireman Club Road in Eden, NC, this drive-up movie theatre boasts two large screens, featuring a variety of movies. Best of all, prices are easy on your wallet, with adult tickets starting at $7, and children’s tickets starting at $5. Load up the family, grab your buckets of popcorn and come watch a movie under the stars this summer. Curious about what movies will be featured this summer? Cheer on your favorite local sports team. From baseball to soccer, there are plenty of sports to watch outdoors this upcoming summer season. First off, catch local legends, The Winston-Salem Dash, take on various leagues at Truist Stadium. These events are always very family friendly, so this is a terrific opportunity for the entire family to enjoy being outdoors together. Tickets are $37 and higher. If you enjoyed watching an outdoor movie, also consider bringing all to the Truist Stadium on June 27th at 5:30 p.m. for a Signature Community Night screening of “Top Gun: Maverick.” Best of all, this event is completely free! If soccer is more your speed, consider checking out the Salem City FC take on various opponents this summer. Home events are held locally at the Reynolds Stadium, and with tickets priced as low as $12 for general admission, this sporting event will not hurt your wallet.

Learn about various cultures through numerous festivals. If you love international food, vibrant culture and unforgettable music, there are also plenty of diverse cultural festivals taking place this summer.

Pick your own fresh fruit or flowers. There are several farms in the area which provide a wonderful opportunity for all to pick flowers and/or fruit. Located in Pfafftown, NC, the Jones Strawberry Farm features a one-acre patch of strawberries for families to enjoy picking. The local farm offers no admission fee and only charges patrons for the strawberries they pick. Learn more at: jonesstrawberryfarm.com. In nearby Kernersville, enjoy picking fresh sunflowers at the 20-acre Dewberry Farms. Tickets must be pre-purchased online and start at $13.50 for adults and $5 for children. This includes three large sunflowers. For more information, visit: dewberrymanor.com.

Enjoy live music outdoors at more than 30 different concerts. Through the Summer Concert Series, Winston-Salem offers all a fantastic opportunity to head outdoors and enjoy the tunes of various artists. Every Friday at 6:30 p.m., head downtown to Corpening Plaza and enjoy the summer’s free “Downtown Jazz” series. Then on Saturdays, from 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., head out for “Summer on Fourth.” This outdoor concert series takes place on 4th Street in front of Foothills Brewing (638 W. 4th Street) and will feature a wide variety of artists.
