Applied Family Services is a growing non-profit located in Winston-Salem. It was born out of a desire to fill a gap in services for children and their families. We aim to serve, advocate, and empower families of children with developmental differences. We currently offer a variety of services to meet this need. We offer a specialized preschool and readiness class, an after-school program, tutoring services, summer camp, as well as other advocacy and family consultative services.
What is unique about our programming is the children and families that we serve. If you only saw a snapshot moment of our children, you might not notice anything out of the ordinary. However, if you observed longer, you might find that they could have difficulty with their motor skills, or have very specialized interests. Their attention might be everywhere or stuck on a thought or object. They may not like loud noises, and yet are the loudest person in the room. They may appear disobedient when, in actuality, there’s a gap in communication. These are the incredible children whom we have the honor of serving. Children who are currently with us might not quite fit into the societal structure around them.
If you were to meet our staff, you would meet some of the most fiercely devoted teachers and leaders in this field. They teach, they play, they guide, and subsequently learn from the most amazing children. Our staff provides a space where our children can be present with a group of peers who have similar interests. They promote growth in their relationships and bonding among them. They show them the value of other people, as well as that within themselves.
While we may be a bit biased towards our own staff, we are not alone in serving our children. We have served and continue to serve alongside many other important agencies within our community. We partner as often as we can with other non-profits in our city, who have created a space for our children and their families.
The magnitude of serving our children and families is not taken for granted. Our children and their families need and deserve community, and that is what we desire to provide for them. We are immensely grateful that we are able to serve Winston-Salem in this way and plan to continue to do so.
If you are in search of community and/or any of our programs, or know someone who may be, please contact us at [email protected], and find us on Facebook as well @AppliedFamilyServices.
To all of our families, may 2020 be a year of growth and belonging.
