Local Icon, Jeff Smith, to Receive Trellis Supportive Care’s “Living Your Best Life” Award

Piedmont/Triad, NC– Trellis Supportive Care is pleased to announce Jeff Smith, best known to many as Smitty, as the “2019 Best Life Award” recipient for the fourth-annual “Living Your Best Life Speaker Series.” Scheduled for September 25th, 2019, in Winston-Salem, this year’s event brings three nationally-known political icons and strategists, each with decades of notoriety and recognition as frequent guests on network and cable news shows: Ann Compton, Mary Matalin, and James Carville.

The Best Life Award is a celebration and acknowledgement of community members who are living their best lives, and setting an example for others in the Triad.  Jeff Smith may be best known as the creator and publisher of Smitty’s Notes,a valuable resource for anyone looking for news and events in and around Winston-Salem. From his early involvement with the Coalition of Young Leaders, his participation with the Downtown Winston-Salem Partnership, and a myriad of other avenues, Jeff has long been one of Winston-Salem’s greatest promoters and advocates.

Perhaps less known is that Jeff has Multiple Sclerosis (MS). While many might ask the question, “Why me?” Jeff replied, “My life plan 30 years ago, and what it is now, is a lot different. Yet I’m glad the disruptions have been a good thing.” Facing the challenges of MS with such positivity is just one example of how Jeff is living his “best life.”

Previous award recipients include Clyde Fitzgerald of Second Harvest Food Bank; Emily and Keith Davis of Fleet Feet Sports and Mission: Feet First; and Lisa and Bob Gfeller, who turned personal tragedy into a movement to help others. The Best Life Award was created to demonstrate how each of us can make a positive difference in the world.

“We named this event ‘Living Your Best Life’ to help spotlight our mission. Although hospice care is the foundation of our services, it is important that people understand that Trellis Supportive Care is not about helping people die, but rather helping people live fully and comfortably, making the most of every day,” shared Linda Darden, President and CEO of Trellis Supportive Care. “This event energizes me on two fronts. First, I am ecstatic with the level of speakers we bring to the region. And secondly, I am so inspired by our Best Life Award recipients,” added Darden.

Trellis Supportive Care (formerly Hospice & Palliative CareCenter) was the first hospice in the state of North Carolina. Since 1979, hospice care has been the cornerstone of the organization’s care; however, over the years, new and expanded programs have been introduced. These programs include grief counseling and advance care planning—both free of charge—for anyone in the community, as well as expanded palliative care services designed to meet the needs of patients earlier in the disease process. In 1998, the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home was opened, providing around-the-clock care to patients and families needing short-term inpatient care or respite care.

The Trellis Supportive Care staff is comprised of specially trained professionals who work as a team to helppatients and their families live fully and comfortably, with peace of mind—even during life’s most challenging time.
