Whether you live in Kernersville, are driving through Kernersville, shopping in Kernersville, or just happen to be in the vicinity of Kernersville, you need to visit Whit’s Frozen Custard®, located at 508-E East Mountain Street (just off I-40 Business, near Zaxby’s). Whit’s customers come from all over the Triad—from Greensboro to Lewisville. Their frozen custards are just that good!
The shop is open seven days per week, with summer hours running Sunday and Monday from noon to 9:00 pm, Tuesday through Saturday from noon until 10:00 pm. The shop hours are seasonal; check their website (whitscustard.com/nc-kernersville) for hours and additional information.
HISTORY
Whit’s Frozen Custard® has its roots in Ohio; the first store opened in Granville, Ohio on March 3, 2003. In their family-based business, the high standards for ingredients and service have continued through every franchise shop.
Melinda Moore, Managing Owner, and her family relocated to Kernersville from Ohio about three years ago and just celebrated their Whit’s shop’s second year of business.
Custard was developed about 100 years ago in France, and the original flavor is sometimes referred to as “French vanilla” ice cream. The creamy texture and taste are derived by care in making each batch as close to on-demand as possible using high-quality products. You can tell it in the taste.
WHAT MAKES WHIT’S FROZEN CUSTARD® SPECIAL?
“Unlike other ice cream, frozen yogurt, and frozen custard businesses, Whit’s Frozen Custard® is made fresh on-site every day without added preservatives,” explained Melinda. “Lactose-intolerant individuals can tolerate Whit’s due to the lack of processing.”
Whit’s has four primary flavors—vanilla, chocolate, plus their daily and weekly flavors. The weekly flavors are determined by the franchiser. For July the weekly flavors are Week One – Buckeye; Week Two – Mint Cookies & Cream; Week Three – Lemon Drop; Week Four – Penguin Tracks; and Week Five– Peach. With over 50 different toppings to custom-create, Whit’s offers hundreds of flavor variations.
Whit’s daily flavors are selected according to season and customer feedback. “Our flavors use fresh, locally-sourced ingredients whenever possible,” Melinda explained. So, if you have a favorite flavor, be sure to let the team members know!
The Whit’s team also creates cakes, Whitties (home-baked cookies with custard filling), and other custard-based novelties. By the scoop, cone, pint, or quart, there’s a flavor for every taste, and then some!
COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT / EVENTS
Another hallmark of Whit’s Frozen Custard® is their tradition of involvement in the community where they’re located, as well as interaction with other local businesses. For instance, you can find Whit’s flavors at Smitty’s Grille, and Melinda uses cakes from a local baker in some of the flavors. Local Girl Scouts also contribute to daily flavors during cookie season.
With additional space for seating, Whit’s now hosts Chamber of Commerce meetings, Girl Scout meetings, baby showers, birthday parties, and other events. Contact Melinda to reserve the space needed. For private events, hosts are welcome to bring in food or have meals catered.
While in the dining area, be sure to check out the paintings created by the Kernersville Senior Center’s Four Seasons Watercolor Club. The paintings change on a regular basis and are offered for sale at reasonable prices.
Whit’s sponsors local sports, and each year sponsors a soccer team from the Kernersville Soccer Association. Whit’s sponsored the Salvation Army Angel Tree program during the Christmas holidays and provided for 25 local families.
As a community partner, Whit’s offers reduced rates for teacher appreciation and students, fundraising opportunities, and Scooper Star Award cards.
A special treat for this summer—bring the kids by to enjoy Twisted Tuesdays, which includes face painting, balloon sculpting, and a visit from our mascot, Little Whit. Check the website for the event dates and times.
Whit’s is also a sponsor for the Kernersville Chamber of Commerce Music at Twilight concert series scheduled for July 19th and September 27th at the Paul J. Ciener Botanical Garden, beginning at 6:00 pm. Enjoy the music and visit their booth for a tasty treat!
