RiverRun International Film Festival: Family-Friendly Films

The RiverRun International Film Festival is a non-profit cultural organization dedicated to the role of cinema as a conduit of powerful ideas and diverse viewpoints. Founded in 1998, RiverRun is a competitive event held in Winston-Salem that annually showcases new films from both established and emerging filmmakers around the world. Each spring, RiverRun screens new narrative, documentary, short, student and animated films, offering both audience and jury prizes in competition categories. The Festival also presents a broad range of special events each year, including high-profile regional premieres of significant films, celebrity tributes, family matinees and classic retrospectives as well as a variety of panel discussions and parties.

FREE SCREENINGS FOR LOCAL FAMILIES & A DOG-FRIENDLY FILM

The RiverRun International Film Festival will again offer free screenings for the community during the 14th annual Festival, running April 13-22 in Winston-Salem. “We offer free community screenings to connect with audiences from throughout the community. This program also furthers our outreach efforts and ensures the Festival’s demographics match both the diversity of our local community and the diversity of the films we present,” said Andrew Rodgers, RiverRun’s Executive Director. This year, three films will be screened free for the public, including:

BRING YOUR DOG!: ACE VENTURA: PET DETECTIVE

6:30pm on Monday, April 16 at BB&T Ballpark
Directed by Tom Shadyac, this classic comedy about a goofy detective is RiverRun’s 2012 “Fido Frolic and Film” selection, where audiences are encouraged to bring their dogs to the film. RiverRun encourages a suggested donation of $2 or a can of pet food. All proceeds will benefit the Forsyth County Humane Society to promote animal welfare. The park will be offering specially priced food and drink packages and there will be a free mobile photo booth for humans and dogs alike to make a memory of the event. Attendees can also enter to win a $100 gift card to PetSmart.

E.T.: THE EXTRA-TERRESTRIAL
6:00pm on Tuesday, April 17 at Hanesbrands Theatre
Directed by Steven Spielberg, this Oscar-winning film about a boy and a stranded alien serves as a family-friendly introduction to RiverRun’s 2012 Spotlight theme on “Science Fiction Favorites.” Sponsored by Hanesbrands Inc.
WHY I WRITE: THE TWIN POETS
7:00pm on Friday, April 20 at Hanesbrands Theatre
Directed by Sharon Baker, this documentary profiles a pair of artists devoted to helping underprivileged youths in their Delaware neighborhood through the art of spoken word poetry. This film is screening as part of RiverRun’s ‘Films With Class’ program, which incorporates films into area classrooms. Sponsored in part by the North Carolina Arts Council.
