Earth Day Fun for the Family
Posted in Child Care, Hobbies by kmelang | Tags: advertising, crafts, earth day, family, Forsyth Family Magazine, magazine, north carolina, upcycleOld Richmond Elementary School celebrates Earth Day tomorrow with plenty of fun activities! Here’s a few you can do with your family as you celebrate Earth Weekend in the Triad!

Upcycle Store – in our Upcycle Store, Art at the Heart took strips of magazine and made beads into necklaces! Take a page from a magazine, cut it one inch at the top down to a point at the bottom, so it looks like a long triangle. Wrap it around a toothpick with just a touch of glue until it become a small bead. Carefully take the toothpick out and then string with wire.
Go for a hike – walk the trails, pointing out the different trees, birds other parts of nature you see. Pickup trash along the way making sure it is put in its proper place!
Create your own trail mix – ours this year consists of M&M’s, pretzels, Cheerios, banana chips. Let the children mix their own.
Create a thing of beauty – plant a garden with the family, a wonderful activity to do together and something to cherish after Earth Day.
Many of these ideas did not include purchasing anything, just spending your time with your family. Happy Earth Day!

Triad Tuesday: Meet Fiber Artist Olivia Mackie
Posted in Forsyth Family, Triad Tuesday by kmarion | Tags: art, artist, Arts District, family, Fiber, Forsyth, Forsyth Family, Forsyth Family Magazine, Forsyth Woman, gallery, hand-painted, jacket, leather, life, Mackie, magazine, north carolina, Olivia, painting, Peacock, scarves, Silk, Triad Tuesday, Winston-Salem, woman“I design my clothing with a focus on color, shape and textures that are created on the fabric with paints and dyes. Each piece is not only exquisitely unique in color and design, but is also comfortable to wear. I incorporated my prior experience with painting and my love of fabrics to create a versatile wardrobe of wearable art,” explained Mackie.
She has always found it rewarding to work with people, having had years as an addictions specialist. She compares that rewarding experience to her work now as an artist: “It is a similar gift to watch people enjoy the colors and shapes of my clothes and to realize that art has the power to evoke emotional responses and to be a healing force – in both the viewer and the artist,” said Mackie.
“At times, I am surprised with the results of a work that seems to have a life of its own – in spite of my intent. This reminds me of the truth that I am not in control of the process. I guide it.”
“Creating art on fabric is an exciting way to express myself at this point in my life,” said Mackie, “My work is like a spiritual journey that allows me to return to the dye table – day after day – with renewed anticipation of what beauty will evolve.”
