Wake Forest Athletics has received some phenomenal recognition this year at both the national and international levels. First came Hollywood’s depiction of the moving story of Luke and Jon Abbate in the movie “The Fifth Quarter,” which was released to theaters March 25.

The movie told of the sad but courageous experiences that took place with the Abbate family after the loss of their son Luke, and of middle linebacker Jon Abbate’s tribute to his younger brother, along with the 2006 Wake Forest football team and fans  en route to their ACC Championship season. Following this highly inspirational movie event, came news of another big event for Wake Forest and the rest of our community—The Winston-Salem Open at Wake Forest University, an ATP Tennis Tournament to be held August 21–27 at the new state-of-the-art tennis facility, located  between BB&T Field and the Indoor Tennis Center. This event, with $625,000 in prize money, will showcase quality professional tennis in the U.S. Open Series, and once again  put Wake Forest in the national spotlight, since the tournament is being broadcast on the Tennis Channel, ESPN2, and the finals on CBS.
