There are so many wonderful events and activities going on in and around the Triad during the holiday season! We have historical places, gorgeous foliage, remarkable productions and fantastic light displays, but perhaps the most recognizable tradition for area families is the Tanglewood Festival of Lights. Every year, families and friends from all over travel here to witness this amazing display, but the people of Tanglewood wanted to share this special celebration with the most deserving people in a truly unique way by means of their Walk for Wishes.
“We have had several “Walk for Wishes” over the last few years,” said Don Timmons, the Triad regional director of the Make-A-Wish Foundation® of Central and Western North Carolina. “Volunteer Lynn Kanode chaired the first one about 6 years ago. They have changed locations several times, until we partnered with the Tanglewood Festival of Lights last year. About mid-week, we were expecting 600 walkers, but more than 1,200 showed up and enjoyed a casual walk with friends and family through the light show. The feedback was great, so we are heading into our second year. We raised $30,000 last year and have a goal of $45,000 this year. There will be special recognition and prizes for our walkers who raise the most money, but any participant who raises $50 or more will receive a Make-A-Wish T-shirt. In addition to raising money, we want our participants to enjoy a beautiful, casual walk through the light show, with live music and entertainment along the way, while spending quality time with family and friends—and then make plans to join us again in 2012.”
