For many, family is not a blood relation, but a bond that has been formed for a variety of reasons. The many employees of K & W Cafeterias consider themselves family. Many of their customers come to feel that way, too. Loyalty and a strong work ethic are among the reasons many K & W employees stay on the job way past the usual retirement age. The much loved Harriet Lynch (known as the pie lady) began working for K & W when she was 70 years old, not retiring until she was 91.
Age and health seem to be about the only reasons anyone ever wants to leave K & W’s employ. Boyd Morris, former Mayor of Greensboro, planned to retire after years in the restaurant business and public service, but had no plans with what to do with his free time. When approached to come to work at K & W Cafeterias as the public relations director, he quickly accepted. Morris became known for handing out rose stickers to customers whom he thanked for eating at the cafeteria. He continued this work for 13 years.
