peach ice cream. But statistically speaking, the most popular flavor of all time is…you guessed it, vanilla! With summer here and July being National Ice Cream Month, we’d like to share a little trivia about ice cream.
Historians report that ice cream goes back to around 200 B.C. and evolved from iced water beverages. Roman Emperor Nero allegedly had snow transported by slaves from the mountains to make frozen drinks. Fruits and juices were added to create flavored ice. Later, Marco Polo (1254-1324) returned from the Orient with a type of ice cream sorbet recipe.
English colonists introduced Americans to ice cream in the 1600s. With the invention of the hand-crank freezer in 1846, people began making ice cream at home. Commercial production of ice cream entered the competition during the 1920s when the first continuous- process freezer was invented. Ice cream popularity soared in the 1930s with the advent of different varieties. In 1928 Howard Johnson introduced 28 flavors. Before that, your choices were limited to vanilla, chocolate and strawberry. It is estimated that today there are close to 1000 different flavors, with new variations continuously being created.
